Outcomes from the "2024 in Review & 2025 Predictions" Webinar

By nllewellyn, 20 December, 2024

Our audience polls revealed something fascinating: while AI dominates industry headlines, organizations are primarily focused on foundational infrastructure improvements. An overwhelming 57% of attendees identified increased reliance on hybrid cloud storage as the most significant trend for 2025, followed by AI-powered automation at 29%.

This aligns perfectly with what I'm seeing in my day-to-day interactions with media organizations. The focus isn't on chasing the next shiny technology but on building robust, efficient systems that deliver real value.

Specifically Missing AR/VR and 360 Video

Interestingly, immersive content (AR/VR, 360 video) received no votes in our predictions poll. It's entirely possible that these fields were underrepresented by the attendees, and Jonathan Wray had some things to say about AR's use in sports recently, but the feedback from the polls suggests that while these technologies may have future potential, organizations are currently focused on optimizing their core operations and infrastructure.

Is Storage the Unsung Hero of Media Innovation?

One of the most interesting discussions centered around the evolution of storage solutions. The industry is moving away from the binary choice between cloud and on-premises, instead embracing intelligent hybrid approaches that optimize both accessibility and cost-effectiveness.

A particularly noteworthy point emerged around LTO adoption. While some organizations are still considering LTO implementations, we're seeing a clear trend toward disk-based active archives with S3 compatibility. The key driver? The need for immediate access to content when opportunities arise.

Considering the Practical Side of AI

While AI-powered automation ranked second in our predictions poll, the discussion revealed a mature, pragmatic approach to AI adoption. Instead of viewing AI as a replacement for existing systems, organizations are looking at it as an enhancement to well-structured storage and workflow solutions.

The conversation highlighted a crucial point: successful AI implementation relies heavily on having the right storage infrastructure in place. Without efficient access to your content, even the most advanced AI tools won't deliver their full potential.

Balancing Strategy and Budget Plans

The shadow of 2024's budget constraints loomed large in our discussion, but there's optimism for 2025. Organizations are moving from cautious exploration to strategic implementation, particularly in Q1 and Q2. However, this isn't about spending more – it's about spending smarter.

Thoughts about 2025

What became clear during our discussion is that 2025 won't be about revolutionary changes but rather about evolutionary improvements. Organizations are prioritizing:

  • Building robust, scalable storage infrastructures
  • Implementing targeted automation that enhances existing workflows
  • Focusing on solutions that deliver measurable ROI
  • Maintaining control over content security and accessibility

The Quiet Revolution of Sustainability

While sustainability initiatives garnered only 14% of votes for 2025 predictions, our discussion revealed how modern storage architectures naturally contribute to environmental goals through reduced power consumption and more efficient resource utilization.

Final Thoughts on the Webinar

As someone who has witnessed the industry's evolution from both technical and operational perspectives, I'm excited about the practical, value-driven approach organizations are taking toward technology adoption. 2025 looks set to be a year where we move from discussing potential to delivering real, measurable improvements in how media organizations operate.

The focus on hybrid storage solutions and practical AI implementation suggests a maturing industry that's learned to balance innovation with operational efficiency. As we move into 2025, the key to success will be finding ways to enhance existing workflows rather than replacing them wholesale.
